hiroshi[m]: 250G should be more than enough for an os
<ashkitten>
that's ridiculous

It isn't ridiculous. Bloat of curtent OSes is ridiculous. It has been sorta OK while we needed only one, but when we need a round dozen, it becomes debilitating.

<hiroshi[m]>
ashkitten: did you use qubes os ?
<hiroshi[m]>
250G is good enough if you have a bloated base os without vms and a few containers. if you are using lisp/haskell/latex you will need more space for sure
<ehmry>
would be nice to have another voice meet like the nixcon security breakout
<hiroshi[m]>
ashkitten: 250GB for the OS only is more than enough. alj was complaining about the design of qubes templates/appVm. you can't share easily disks. And this is a huge problem for him because he has so much 'data' that 250G isn't enough.
<pie_>
ehmry: i didnt read the scroll but i think the only thing that needs to happen for that is scheduling :D
<pie_>
well that and the infra...
<ehmry>
pie_: mumble.nix-community.org is still up
<pie_>
*nod*
<ncm[m]>

<hiroshi[m]>
adelie linux is a good choice if you are looking for a linux desktop without systemd and stable release
<ehmry>
starting your window manager before the network and the disks come up is also completely practical
<pie_>
unrelated, has anyone thought about spectrum on mobile? apparently aarch64 (and a bit before that?) has virtualization extensions
<pie_>
the genode people appear to have done some work
<pie_>
ive never done any event planning but i guess id try to find a date where the usual suspects wont be occupied by default and maybe in a few weeks? <ehmry> would be nice to have another voice meet like the nixcon security breakout
<ehmry>
pie_: I think the problem with mobile is that you need support contracts for the hardware to make it viable
<pie_>
i dont follow
<ehmry>
if there is a problem with the kernel, who's gonna fix it?
<ehmry>
I get the impression that phones are the broadcom rpi open source scam but a hundred times worse
<pie_>
heh
<hiroshi[m]>
pie_: you have nixos mobile. but spectrum uses crosvm . I don't know if that is possible at the moment with nixos mobile + phone features
<hiroshi[m]>
ehmry: it is even worse than only bradcom rpi scam . big nasty corporation building a phone with BS blocks. like samsung for example. so basically you have a nasty box without any possible way to install or use an alternative to the weak os
<pie_>
well, nixos mobile is part of the reason i was wondering about the possibility
<jpds>
Depends on what you want, but if it's security; https://grapheneos.org is now considered the most secure Android build out there

<hiroshi[m]>
yes graphene os is the best choice for sure. and what is really ironic is that the best phone for grapheneOs are google phones
<jpds>
hiroshi[m]: It's not, the Google phones are simultaneously user and developer devices
<jpds>
Whereas other vendors' phones are purely user devices
<hiroshi[m]>
jpds: it is really ironic because google is the big brother collecting data like no other, with youtube, the search engine and other projects
<jpds>
Sure, but they're also the ones that created Android
<hiroshi[m]>
for the other phone vendors like samsung, it is just a toxic business model. where you will be force to change a expensive phone each 2years max
<zgrep>
Google's also the company that created Chromium.
<jpds>
The pixels have a lifetime of 3 years too
<zgrep>
Chromium OS and Chromebooks*
<hiroshi[m]>
yes and so many good projects like golang, crossvm ...
<jpds>
Verified boot
<jpds>
How I wish my non-mobile systems could do that
<hiroshi[m]>
yes the fact that a chromebook has coreboot is a good reason to have one xD
<zgrep>
Lenovo will hopefully be coming out with a Thinkpad Chromebook soon. That seems (at least to me) like an almost ideal choice of hardware in the short term, just in terms of how it feels (I like Thinkpads).
<hiroshi[m]>
we need to wait a little longer ARM64 and RISC-V are coming
<ncm[m]>
I have a PinePhone. Very nice hardware. Software is not very battle-ready, but is improving fast.
<ncm[m]>
It is all wayland-y.
<zgrep>
A little longer will still be several years.
<zgrep>
IIRC there are still parts of RISC-V that are in flux (not yet ratified), that would be quite useful for a desktop/laptop. Such as hypervisor, SIMD, etc. So I don't see it happening any time soon, but I sincerely hope for it to happen sooner rather than later.
<ncm[m]>
It will take a long time. And it will always be slower, for reasons.
<hiroshi[m]>
yes but alternatives are coming outside the BS current big vendors (dell,lenovo,hp...)
