<qyliss>
Anybody have ideas for something I could link to in community documentation for people who might not have used IRC before?
<MichaelRaskin>
Is there any need? I think Freenode has its own webchat page?
<qyliss>
There is, but I still think IRC is intimidating to new people.
<qyliss>
(Or at least, that's what I hear.)
<qyliss>
Ideally I'd self-host thelounge but only access to this channel.
<qyliss>
It doesn't support that though.
<MichaelRaskin>
Nick registration might be kind of nonobvious
<MichaelRaskin>
But #spectrum isn't registration-only
<qyliss>
Yeah, very deliberately.
<qyliss>
I guess it'll be okay
<qyliss>
If somebody regularly joins via web chat somebody can help them set something up
<MichaelRaskin>
Well, #nixos was non-registration channel for a long time until…
<qyliss>
That should have been unset ages ago.
<qyliss>
imho
<MichaelRaskin>
It does seem like the spam wave has ended
<qyliss>
aaaages ago
<MichaelRaskin>
Should we ask someone on #nixos-chat if registration-requirement for #nixos-* is still a good idea?
<qyliss>
probably
<MichaelRaskin>
Anyway, I have some amount of doubt that people who fail to setup a registered account and join #nixos have high chances of setting up a working NixOS installation (or configuring anything non-default during Ubuntu installation, for that matter).
<MichaelRaskin>
With no registration and nothing ready to use (I tried to find your Xpra scripts to see how configuring Xpra looks like and fails), I think if someone fails to join #spectrum, it's our way of saving them from trashing their HDD.
<qyliss>
Spectrum will hopefully end up easier to install than NixOS, fwiw.
<qyliss>
But for now, sure, you're right.
<samueldr>
#nixos isn't registered only AFAICT
<samueldr>
unless my client has de-synced again from the irc state :/
<qyliss>
What's #nixos-unregistered for then?
<samueldr>
leftover
<qyliss>
Someone arrived there a few days ago
<samueldr>
it's only an artifact
<samueldr>
yeah
<MichaelRaskin>
#nixos-security is registered-only
<qyliss>
Were they just somehow already in it or something?
<qyliss>
Oh that would make sense
<samueldr>
I think the #nixos-* subchannels might still have their regsistered states
<qyliss>
Given what they talked about
<MichaelRaskin>
But not invite-only
<qyliss>
MichaelRaskin: fwiw, I'll have a look for the Xpra stuff, but it may have died with the shitty Chromebook I think I was using at the time.
<MichaelRaskin>
You want to say your system configuration doesn't always live in a repository with regular backups?
<qyliss>
But I'd only been using NixOS for a couple of months when I wrote this
<qyliss>
IIRC it was inlined into /etc/configuration.nix
<MichaelRaskin>
Whatever you hope to achieve about ease of installation, understanding «what the hell is going on» will not be easier than reaching #spectrum
<qyliss>
that's true
<qyliss>
it's different skills though
<qyliss>
and honestly, at some point i'd love for installing spectrum to be at least as easy as installing ubuntu
<qyliss>
I have a big vision
<qyliss>
I might well not get there, but it's still important to keep in mind.
<samueldr>
and then there's friction; clicking a link and reaching the channel vs. setting up an irc client on *that* machine which may not have one
<samueldr>
when you're a wit's end already, it may seem like an insurmountable task
<qyliss>
Yeah
<qyliss>
I'm hoping Hyperkitty might help with that.
<MichaelRaskin>
Well, Freenode _does_ have webchat
<qyliss>
I imagine it will be the most approachable way for people to participate.
<qyliss>
It does, but IRC webchat isn't exactly a great experinece.
<qyliss>
Anyway, some good news: I need to write one more page for a new, expanded website, make an announcement post on the mailing list about everything I've been setting up, and then write a little text file that's just a list of external software that will be important to the project.
<qyliss>
And then that's my first milestone and NLnet will give me some money!
<MichaelRaskin>
Great!
<qyliss>
(This milestone is a boring one, I know. The next one is to actually implement some compartmentalization in Nix, which will be far more exciting.)
<qyliss>
But this one is exciting to me because I will have money, which right now is getting quite close to not being the case. :P
<MichaelRaskin>
Ouch
<qyliss>
Has taken a bit longer to ramp things up than I'd expected
<qyliss>
Mostly my own fault
<qyliss>
It's gonna be okay.
<qyliss>
And I've produced a lot of nice Nixpkgs work as part of this, which isn't quite ready for general use yet, but I need to sort this first.
