yeah, it's a surprising feature... I was made aware of it way back when since rox-filer shows an overlaid icon on files with xattr

NFS seems a bit much especially with the TCP/IP requirement, has anyone tried using 9p? it can apparently be used with unix sockets and has a robust seeming server that doesnt require a running service: https://github.com/chaos/diod
