<aaronjanse> qyliss: I'm finally done with exams. What would be the best way for me to contribute to Spectrum? (perhaps working on the Wayland proxy you suggested?)
<aaronjanse> Actually I don't know what the Wayland thing would be. I'm willing to work on whatever
<qyliss> aaronjanse: hey! what are your skills? You obviously know Nix. Do you know Rust or C?
<aaronjanse> I barely know C, but I'm very familiar with Rust :-)
<aaronjanse> (my most recent rust project: https://github.com/aaronjanse/nix-eval-lsp )
<qyliss> oh right yes that's you :D
<aaronjanse> Hehe
<aaronjanse> My github profile probably best explains what I'm familiar with
<aaronjanse> But I'm also motivated to learn new things, ofc
<qyliss> alrightly, let's have a look at my todo list
<qyliss> how much time do you have available? are you looking to just help out with fixes, or would you be interested in taking on a whole project? (sounds like maybe the latter, since you asked about the wayland proxy?)
<aaronjanse> I'm willing to take on a whole project. It's hard to estimate how much time I have available, but probably 5 - 15 hrs/week?
<qyliss> cool, okay
<qyliss> I just did a lot of Rust stuff, which is a bit of a shame
<qyliss> but there are two things that come to mind
<qyliss> one is a CLI for starting VMs, and the other is the Wayland proxy
<qyliss> I think the Wayland proxy would work best, because the CLI requirements are a bit up in the air, and also it's sort of boring
<MichaelRaskin> Writing a CLI wrapper with no requirements and underlying code in flux is not always boring. But also usually not a good kind of exciting
<philipp> lol
<qyliss> aaronjanse: know anything about Wayland so far?
<aaronjanse> I think I know the basics (why it replaces X11, running graphical stuff without root, basic isolation between windows). I've also (re-)read the Qubes-lite blog post at least a dozen times so far. My understanding is that sommelier lets a VM communicate with the host, then we'd build something on the host to accept these connections then do stuff like maybe adding borders to windows
<qyliss> okay, cool :)
<qyliss> it's late here, and tomorrow I'm speaking at a conference, but tomorrow or the next day I'll try to write down a bit about what the Wayland proxy should do, and what we've been thinking about how it could work
<aaronjanse> Awesome. Good luck at the conference!
<qyliss> thanks :)
<qyliss> aaronjanse: are you subscribed to the mailing lists?
<aaronjanse> Not yet!
<aaronjanse> I'll subscribe tonight
<qyliss> well, up to you, because I'll CC you directly as well (give me an email address?)
<aaronjanse> aaron@ajanse.me would be great
<qyliss> great :)
<qyliss> in the mean time, if you want, you could read a bit about the Wayland protocol
<aaronjanse> Will do
<qyliss> I recall https://wayland-book.com/ being pretty okay
<qyliss> Wayland is a really neat protocol imo
<qyliss> its design taught me a lot
<aaronjanse> Ooh, I'll take a look. Thank you for the link
